Things That Seem Still by cryslara Things That Seem Still by cryslara
This was mostly to practice texture, lighting and colour, but I like the eventual mood that came out of it.

There's not much more to say about it. Critique is always very welcome, but anything will probably be applied more in later art rather than reworking this one. =)

Tools: Photoshop, Wacom Intuos 3 tablet
Time: 6-7hours?
Music: Still - Ben Folds

This piece...there's a lot of things I can say about this piece. Asides from being absolutely stunning it leaves me in awe at the fact that it makes me want to look away from the almost bittersweet sadness I get from it yet I want to continue looking, and noticing all the little details you put in. Each time I look I notice a new one, the little bright dots coming off of the creature and floating up- almost as if inch by inch he/she (it?) was disintegrating into tiny particles floating up into a fading light.

The mood you managed to create with such a limited palet is not only incredible but mind boggling to me. I don't know much about art yet, I still have a lot to learn, but I know that it takes skill to be able to take such a sweet and happy color such as yellow and use it to create such a bittersweet like picture. I think this color scheme seemed to project more sadness- at least to me- than any blue tones could have ever done.

Critique wise it's really hard to say since trying to find something I think needs improvement in this- for me anyway- is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The background is simple but that just adds more attention to the main focus, which is the creature and that lovely expression- please, dont get me started on how I still can't believe how you could pull off such a completely human like expression on something that is, quite obviously, not human- so thats not even a problem I think.

Anyway, I think it would have looked nice if you had added some grass between the rocks by the creature's front claws/feet to balance out some of the grass a little ways behind it but again I dont think its a necessary thing, just one more little detail that could have been. I'm sure I don't have to tell you again, but I will, because it's true- I LOVE this picture.
What do you think?

Did you by chance do this in a size that could be used as a desktop wallpaper? I'm going through my favorites and would like to place this there.

Stunning peace of work. It makes me want to reach out and touch it and feel its feathers. I have no idea what you could call that creature, but It is so adorable and beautiful I want to take it home. You put such lovely emotion into its face. The tip of the wing and the pattern of it remind me of a butterfly or moth.

Not on this particular piece but I have used similar methods in the past on other loose paintings. :) Working in black and white is such great practice for getting stronger value contrasts.

Yes, the mood is very very nice. I actually returned to this picture for a fifth time now and I must say that in future I will return again several times... There is that atmosphere that gets my attention, style of shading, colour palette, it makes me study it with my eyes, searching for more details.
It's a beautiful piece again, I simply love it

Oh wow, thank you. It's really flattering that this has such an impact. I've always loved how detailed paintings can do that though - keep you searching for more. I try to recreate it in my own art. :)

Beautiful!
I love the motes of dust and how the wings seem to be a mixture of bird and butterfly wings.
The lighting is exceptionally well done, especially little details like the rim of light around the flowers in the foreground make the whole painting come to life.
There are only very few points of critique. For one the transition from wing to body looks a bit strange anatomy-wise.
The other thing is the missing texture of the rocks beneath the creature´s feet. Everything else is is done so detailed that they look a little odd.

I added a bit of texture to the rocks and I played with the wing a little, but I get the impression the wing probably wouldn't do much to help in flying anyway. ;) Thank you for your lovely comment and critique.

Another great piece <3 The lighting is awesome, and I love all the different textures this little guy has :] The only thing that looks a little awkward is where his right forepaw casts a shadow on the ground. The shadow seems too dark, or the shading on the paw too light. I'm probably wrong, though, I'm not very good with lighting ^^;
