Artist's Comments

Some paintings flow easily, wonderfully and seemingly effortlessly and in these moments the artist rejoices.

This, however, was not one of those paintings.

I don't know what it is about it, after all, it's one of my favourite colour schemes and has these gorgeous characters and flowy things and autumn but it was a battle every step of the way. I'm almost content with how it eventually turned out but even now there are things I'd fix if I had a few more hours for it.

I'm still requesting critiques on this and go nuts but it will be for the benefit of future paintings rather than reworking this one. =)

But anyway! This was a loose painting commission for the lovely ~LilOrangeDragoness of her LOD and her best bud Skittles. She was a joy to work with and these characters are really cool to boot. I love butterfly wings. =D

They are beautiful, the wings are exquisite!

Besides the great critique you already have, I think a future piece like this should have more to the midground. I can see that there are leaves(?) being kicked up in the frolicking, but there is no real source for them. Perhaps a bit of canopy to show that the trunks do have more to them than just brown poles. It looks to me like you meant for them to be at the edge of a forest, perhaps having just rolled out of it, and a canopy of leaves would help to smooth the scene together, blending the lighting scheme together with the dragons on their little path, and alleviating the odd feeling presented by the left vs. right side of the background. I am assuming this is what was meant because of your lighting source.

I would have also suggested more flora around, such as bushes, but I think it would detract from the focus on the dragons. A few small branches from the trees, though, may work and would blend the canopy into the scene fully.
It would seem based on scale of grass and tree trunks that they are very small dragons, and it would be nice to see more reference to their actual size from surroundings. Another issue that I think would be alleviated by the leaf suggestion. Though, if they are small, having them at the base of one large tree with other trees smaller in the background would present them well, and give better emphasis to both lighting and color scheme. Rather a bit like in your picture 'Glow'.

While I can see in small ways how this was not one of those seductively easy and effortless pieces you mention, despite that the piece has a good flow, and really captures the moment! We all struggle with the issue of a piece fighting us tooth and nail at some point, and it is great to see that you stuck it out and finished it anyway. Kudos!

I hope you find these suggestions helpful to future pieces.

On the other hand, I do love this piece! The sheer wings are very well done, making a great contrast with the solid wings, and the playful theme is very emotive, carrying out to the viewer easily. Their expressions are so joyful that I can not help but smile when I look at them. And the coloration of each dragon nicely compliments the other, for example, their cute little paws!

This is a beautiful piece, and I look forward to more like it!

First off, your pictures are always a treat, no matter what. I love how you captured the motion of the little guy bounding through the air. =P

I, personally, think it has everything to do with the background, and how it seemingly drops off. The right side, not so much, but the left it looks like you laid-down a base-layer of that aqua-greenish colour and planned on doing something with it but just forgot. I think the right side looks okay because it's darker and the colours match a little closer so it's less of an impact, but on the left you see this wonderful detail in the grass and leaves but go up a little further and it just becomes like a generic backdrop.

And to pick it down a little further, I think the highlights on the wing-tips for the dragon laying on the ground just look... odd. Now I imagine that it's simply his/her colour-scheme that there is a thin, light outline, but I think if you maybe, on the edges that are closest to the right side of the page, darkened them just a little bit more, it would have looked a little more natural. Maybe you would have to make the dark-coloured portions a little bit darker to accommodate.

Lovely work, Crys. I hope I never see the end of your artwork.

Ah, this makes me smile so much. Beautiful work!

If it's any consolation, I wouldn't have been able to tell from looking at it that it was a struggle. It all looks very smooth and full of energy.

It is my experience....

That doing commissioned work is a special kind of creative block, and often one of the most annoying. :)

It can be the coolest idea and subject matter ever, but somehow when it comes from someone else, you feel like your hands are tied as to how it must be done...

My critique: "Don't sweat it too much. :)"
