This is Ruubenev; who was my dragon to draw for the Dragon Art Exchange at Livejournal this month.
This character had a very interesting personality in that he was insane - not in a crazy, angry way, but more in that he sometimes 'zones out' and doesn't fully recognise where he is. He can be found talking to the orb but nobody knows if it ever speaks back. Something about that made me want to show the world from his point of view, I thought it would be a fascinating thing to try. The background dissolves into blurs of colour, the land twists and his everything in his world focuses solely around that orb. I wanted to try and show its importance to him. Well, I'm not sure how well this worked out, but hey, I like how it turned out anyway. PS Yes, I do still hate grass. Everytime I paint it it's a pain in every way it possibly can be. I'm sure it loves me somewhere. Deep down at the bottom of its evil stalk. Ruubenev is the property of his creator, I'm just the messenger! Ah, this is such a beautiful piece! At least I think so. I really love the colors in this; so nicely highlighted, darkened and obscured when neccisary to give it a realistic touch. I also really like the dragon -- he seems so flexible in this, and that's pretty neat to me. I even like the grass, but meh. XP
-- Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Wow. I really love this image. The colors are really beautiful -- so many artists make night scenes too monochromatic, and you pulled off a sense of a singular light source while still maintaining vibrant and diverse colors. Its more difficult than many people think! Another thing I like here is the sharpness of the image and your sense of proximity with the light source -- that is, you didn't use the same degree of lightness everywhere -- near to the light you have great brightness, and further the light tapers but is still evident. No critiques here!
-- I passionately hate the idea of being with it, I think an artist has always to be out of step with his time. - Orson Welles |
