Contemplation by cryslara Contemplation by cryslara
Essentially a doodle-turned-painting that was done when I should have been working on other things. :D But I'm getting back into the swing of things and I needed something generic to have fun with first.

Well hey, it's a dragon. Who would've thought. ;)

This is a terrific piece! I love how you've taken something thought to be so evil and made it so innocent! Beautiful work!!

Thanks! I think it's a response to the rather shocked expression the butterfly is sporting. ;)

Even though this dragon looks like it could rip off your head in a half second, it's letting this adorable butterfly perch on it's nose. very cute, if not a little ironic.

I really think you did a beautiful job on the scales, and as previously said, it does resemble a black and white photograph.
one thing negative I could say about it is that it took me a minute to spot the eye among the many scales of this creature. mabye in the future making it a bit bigger? just saying.

But the picture is really beautiful, and that's all I really have to say, right?
*goes off to get some lunch* ^^

Thank you. :) Hey, even dragons have a softer side.
I agree about the eye actually - it was drawn small on purpose as I was trying to push him more towards a saurian look but it does get a little lost amongst all those scales. I could try touching it up a little and defining it more to make it stand out better. :D Thanks for pointing it out.

The crispness and detailing on it also makes it look much like a black and white photograph. Well done! The feathers on the head look a bit random, and more like the dragon stuck them there for fun rather than an actual part of the dragon (which may be the case, even). Their look and texture is marvelous, but they just don't quite seem to fit the ruggedness of the beast (his scales look almost like stone). The butterfly is exquisite as well! If it were colored in yellow, I'd be sure it was a swallow-tail. :D

Very nice work! Now go do what you should have been doing while you were doing this instead. ;)

Thanks Fae! One of my goals for this was to work on my values - I always have some difficulty in getting my darks as dark as I want them so I decided to just get rid of colour and simply work on the shades. I was more successful than I have ever been before which helps to give that 'photo' look I think. :)
While I was painting it I fancied that the dragon had just picked up the feathers from somewhere. I'll admit that I just wanted to paint some feathers again. ;)

And the butterfly is indeed supposed to be a Tiger Swallowtail. We don't have them here but I've fallen in love with the pictures I've found. They're beautiful.

And alright, I'll be off to do what I should've been doing then. :P It's still art related though so I'm content.

Nice moment you captured. The details are amazing. I don't like the feathers though (they are of course very realistic and well drawn), I think those do not fit the other anatomy of the dragon. Scales and feathers are hard to match. The dragon's eyes are so gentle and the butterfly has such a surprised pose. Good picture.

The feathers were mostly an afterthought on the sketch simply because I wanted to paint feathers. :) My reasoning for them being there is that the dragon has just picked them up and stuffed them behind his scales. ;)
Thank you for your thoughtful words - I really appreciate them.

It's interesting to note that I didn't come up with the concept itself until after I finished the dragon and decided it looked too empty.
I went through a number of small animals before deciding on a butterfly :D (which would naturally be one of the most difficult to paint with all those patterns!).
